Ciaran grew up in rural County Galway, where his early passion for the Irish countryside developed through regular family excursions to Connemara's mountains, lakes, and forests. Those childhood weekends exploring the wilderness shaped everything he does now. After completing his BSc in Environmental Science at University College Cork in 2010, he initially worked as a conservation officer for the Irish Wildlife Trust. It was meaningful work, but he felt something was missing. By 2012, he'd made the shift to outdoor writing and journalism, wanting to share his knowledge with a wider audience. The breakthrough came with a series of widely-read guides to Coillte forest parks, which established him as a trusted voice on Ireland's managed woodland recreation.

Over the past decade, he's personally visited and documented over 80 lakeside picnic spots, explored 40+ river recreation areas, and spent countless hours in Coillte facilities across the country. That's not just research — that's genuine fieldwork. He's walked the trails, tested the facilities, sat by the water, and talked to local people about what makes each place special.
